Following last year’s landmark Supreme Court’s ruling striking down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and the extraordinary state-wide coalition effort to push back the discriminatory HJR-3 in Indiana, Lambda Legal filed a federal lawsuit, Baskin v. Bogan, on behalf of five same-sex couples seeking the freedom to marry and respect for out-of-state marriages in Indiana. On June 25th, U.S. District Court Judge Richard L. Young ruled that Indiana’s discriminatory ban on marriage for same-sex couples is unconstitutional! Lambda Legal continues our fight in federal court to preserve this victory for same-sex couples in the Hoosier state, including our clients Amy Sandler and Niki Quasney, who are battling cancer.
With this case moving through the courts and the state determined to oppose us, questions remain about how the fight for marriage will be resolved in the courts and what it means for same-sex couples and their families in Indiana: What do recent court rulings means for couples who wish to marry? How does the Indiana court battle fit into the national strategy to secure marriage equality? What steps and considerations are important for couples considering marriage in another state or here at home? What federal and state benefits are conveyed to same-sex couples through recognized marriage? How are our opponents working against us, in “right to discriminate” efforts or under cover of “religious exemptions”? And, what’s next in our movement – for employment, healthcare, and housing protection – even as marriage equality is realized in more states?
Lambda Legal’s panel of law and policy experts will share an overview of the recent court victories and discuss how Lambda Legal and our partners are advancing the front for equality for all couples and families.
