The world still grieves over the senseless violence in Orlando Sunday morning. Indy Pride, Inc. is calling on allies to support the LGBTQ+ community by taking part in our blood drive, Tuesday, June 14th.
While a record number of people have arrived on-site in Orlando to donate blood, history reminds us that the the blood on the shelf is always first to go. Indianapolis can show support by giving today to safeguard against future shortages both at home and across the nation.
Since the early days of the HIV and AIDS epidemic more than 30 years ago, gay and bisexual men in the United States have been banned from donating blood. This policy is shifting to allow donations by gay and bisexual men, but unfortunately the implementation of a new process will not be complete until August.
Government agency process does not always align with immediate need. For this reason, Indy Pride calls on our straight friends and family to support the LGBTQ+ community by donating blood, Tuesday, June 14th, 4p - 8p, at the Indy Pride headquarters (429 E. Vermont Street). Indy Pride will also collect cash donations for the Equality Florida victims and survivors fund.
Alternatively, donors can visit the Indiana Blood Center located at 3450 N Meridian St any day. If you are not eligible or unable to donate tomorrow, please join Indy Pride for an evening of community and appreciation for those who are donating.
Acts of violence such as Orlando can create fear within the LGBTQ+ community, but we must not let this tragedy prevent taking action. This is a moment for Indianapolis to unite, to be strong in the face of adversity, and to continue spreading a message of love and community.
